ICO 42001 AIMS Officer & Auditor
AI Management Systems (AIMS) based on ISO/IEC 42001, preparing professionals for Officer and Auditor roles in AI governance and compliance.

ICO AIMS 42001:2023 FND
A two-day introduction to AI management systems under ISO/IEC 42001. You learn what the standard requires, how Annex A controls work, and where the EU AI Act meets them. Prepares you for the ICO AIMS 42001:2023 FND exam. No prior standards experience needed.
About this course
Every organisation that builds or buys artificial intelligence is now expected to show it has the technology under control. The EU AI Act made that a legal question, not only a good practice. ISO/IEC 42001 is the answer the market settled on: the first international standard for an AI management system, the framework that lets a company prove its AI is governed rather than improvised.
This foundation course takes you through that standard over two instructor led days. You learn the vocabulary, the structure of the management system, the controls in Annex A and the guidance in Annex B, and enough about artificial intelligence itself to apply all of it. You leave able to read the standard, follow a certification project and speak with auditors on equal terms.
Who this course is for
- Quality, compliance and risk managers whose organisation is introducing AI
- IT and data leads asked to bring AI projects under a management system
- Consultants and project managers preparing for an ISO/IEC 42001 certification
- Anyone already familiar with ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 27001 who now needs the AI counterpart
- Future AIMS Officers and AIMS Auditors, for whom this is the first step
What you will learn
- Use the terms of ISO/IEC 42001 precisely: management system, policy, objective, risk, control, conformity, impact assessment
- Explain how an AI management system is built, from the context of the organisation through planning and operation to continual improvement
- Work with Annex A: what the control objectives cover and how a Statement of Applicability is put together
- Apply Annex B guidance to choose and justify controls for a real AI use case
- Describe how AI systems are built and trained, enough to judge where the risks sit
- Place the EU AI Act, the GDPR and related obligations next to the standard and see where each applies
Course outline
Day one, the management system
- How the course and the exam are structured
- Terms and definitions, the shared vocabulary the standard depends on
- The AI management system in full: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation, improvement
Day two, controls, AI and the law
- Annex A, the normative control objectives and controls
- Annex B, implementation guidance for AI controls
- Introduction to artificial intelligence: how the systems you are governing actually work
- AI laws and relevant regulations, with the EU AI Act at the centre
- Exam preparation and sample questions
Prerequisites
None. The course is built as an entry point. Experience with any ISO management system helps but is not required, and no technical or programming background is assumed.
Exam and certification
The course prepares you for the ICO AIMS 42001:2023 FND examination, awarded by ICO International Certification Organization GmbH. It is an accredited certification exam, not a certificate of attendance.
- 30 multiple choice questions, where one, several or all options may be correct
- 45 minutes, closed book
- Pass mark of 60 percent
- Taken online, at a time and place you choose
The exam is available as an optional add on to the course. Full details are published by the awarding body at ico-cert.org.
What is included
- Two days, 12 hours, of instructor led training in English, delivered online or on site
- Small groups, never more than 28 participants
- Complete course materials, exercises and sample exam questions
- Worked examples from European organisations in every block
- Certificate of attendance, with the ICO AIMS 42001:2023 FND exam as an optional add on

ICO AIMS 42001:2023 Officer
Three days of practical AI governance for the people who will run it. You implement an AI management system under ISO/IEC 42001, apply Annex A controls, and meet EU AI Act obligations. Prepares you for the ICO AIMS 42001:2023 PRO exam and the AIMS Officer role.
About this course
Knowing what ISO/IEC 42001 asks for is one thing. Building the management system, choosing the controls, defending them in an audit and keeping the whole thing alive as the AI landscape shifts is another. That work belongs to a named person, and in this scheme that person is the AI Officer.
This professional course prepares you for that role over three instructor led days. You move from the requirements of the standard to implementation: how to scope an AI management system, run impact assessments, select and justify Annex A controls, and keep the organisation on the right side of the EU AI Act. You leave with the working knowledge the role demands and the preparation for the certification that names it.
Who this course is for
- Future AI Officers, the people who will own AI governance in their organisation
- Compliance, risk and quality managers implementing ISO/IEC 42001
- Consultants advising clients on AI management systems and certification
- Internal auditors who will audit an AIMS
- IT and data leads responsible for AI systems already in production
What you will learn
- Scope and build an AI management system that fits the organisation rather than a template
- Run an AI system impact assessment and turn its findings into decisions
- Select, apply and justify the Annex A controls, and produce a defensible Statement of Applicability
- Read Annexes B, C and D and use their guidance where the normative text stops
- Connect the management system to the EU AI Act, the GDPR and sector rules, so one set of evidence serves several obligations
- Prepare the organisation for a certification audit and know what evidence an auditor will ask for
Course outline
Day one, the system in depth
- How the course and the exam are structured
- Terms and definitions at professional depth
- The AI management system clause by clause, with implementation decisions at each step
Day two, controls
- Annex A, the normative control objectives and controls, applied to real use cases
- Annexes B, C and D, the informative guidance and how to use it
Day three, AI and the law
- Artificial intelligence revisited, at the level a governing role needs
- AI laws and relevant regulations, with the obligations the EU AI Act places on providers and deployers
- Exam preparation and sample questions
Prerequisites
None that are formally required. We recommend the ICO AIMS 42001:2023 FND certificate or equivalent knowledge of the standard, because this course starts where the foundation level ends.
